Wuthrich’s Walk-Off Evens Series with Cardinals

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Junior John Wuthrich hit a shot over the center fielder to give the Texas State baseball team (4-3) a 4-3 walk-off victory over Lamar Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark. The win evened the series with the visitors.

Wuthrich was one of four Bobcats to have a multi-hit game. Will Hollis went 5-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, a triple and a home run. Colton Moore, Jaxon Williams and Wuthrich all had two hits apiece. The junior outfielder drove in two runs and Moore plated one.

Brent Hebert (2-0) shutout the Cardinals over the final two innings to earn the win. He struck out one and issued one walk. Taking the loss for Lamar was Douglas Palmer (0-1) after an inning of relief.

Trevis Sundgren threw 5.2 innings and recorded two strikeouts in his second start of the season. He allowed two runs on six hits and one walk. Otto Wofford tossed 1.1 innings of relief, giving up a run and posting a strikeout.

In the second, the Cardinals struck first with a solo homer from Chase Kemp. The second run of the inning was added on an RBI single by Avery George.

With an out in the third, Hollis blasted a 3-2 offering that hit off the left centerfield wall. The Lamar centerfielder tried to make the catch but missed and the ball ricocheted away from any other Cardinal to allow Hollis to slide in for a triple. Wuthrich would follow with a sacrifice fly to center to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Dalton Shuffield reached base on a bunt single and moved up to second on a wild throw by the pitcher in the fourth. Two batters later, Moore hit a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield to bring home Shuffield and tie the game.

Hollis started off the fifth hitting a homer to left center in the exact spot of his triple to put Texas State in front 3-2.

The Bobcats would maintain the lead until the seventh when George singled home his second run of the game.

Isaiah Ortega-Jones led off the ninth by drawing a walk. Hollis singled through the right side two batters later to put the game-winning run in scoring position. Wuthrich blasted the first pitch he saw to center field for the walk-off win.

The rubber match of the series takes place at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
