Early Offense Propels Bobcats Past Cardinals

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team (5-3) scored all of its runs over the first two innings in an 8-7 win over Lamar (3-4) Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark to take the series.

For the third straight game, the Cardinals scored first with two runs in the first.

Three walks over the first four batters loaded the bases for the Bobcats in their half of the first. A 3-1 pitch was hit through the left side by Jaxon Williams to drive in two runs to tie the game. Cole Coffey followed with another single, this time through the left side, to bring home another run.

Cameron Gibbons, making his first start in a TXST uniform, laced a single to center field to increase the advantage to 4-2. A wild pitch brought home another run and an RBI double from Chase Evans gave Texas State a 6-2 lead after the first inning.

Three hits and two walks in the next half inning saw Lamar score four times to tie the game 6-6.

Will Hollis started the bottom of the second with a leadoff double that landed just fair down the right field line. A walk to John Wuthirch put two on and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Justin Thompson gave the advantage back to the Bobcats with a sacrifice fly to center.

Coffey recorded an infield single back up the middle to make it an 8-6 lead for TXST after two innings.

With both starting pitchers out of the game, each bullpen shutdown the opposing offense with just seven combined hits of the last seven frames.

Lamar scored the final run of the game in the seventh when Logan Berlof grounded out to Coffey at first with the bases loaded.

Getting the win on the mound was Cameron Bush (1-0). The redshirt freshman threw 3.2 shutout innings of relief with two strikeouts in his collegiate debut. Tristian Stivors recorded the final four outs to earn his second save of the season. Suffering the loss was Austin Faith (0-1) after he gave up eight runs on five hits and four walks over an inning of work.

Wes Engle got the start but allowed six runs on four hits and walks while striking out two. Tony Robie had two strikeouts in two innings and surrendered a run on two hits. Both Matthew Nicholas and Dontae Woodard got the lone batter they faced out.

Coffey was the lone Bobcat with a multi-hit game with two. Both he and Williams plated two runs apiece. John Wuthrich came around to score twice as he went 1-for-2 with two walks.

Next for the Bobcats is a midweek contest on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Rice at Bobcat Ballpark.
