SAN MARCOS, Texas – Arkansas State was awarded a highly controversial penalty kick early in the second overtime that was converted to pick up a 1-0 win over the Texas State soccer team Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
Â
With the setback, the Bobcats are now 2-8-1 on the season and 2-4-0 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Red Wolves are 7-0-0 overall and 6-0-0 in conference play.
Â
Just 26 seconds into the second overtime period, Darby Stotts attempted to get to the that ball that was headed into the 18-yard box but she could not get to it in time as it bounced just past her reach. She threw her shoulder into
Kamaria Williams, who was in a defensive position to shield the ball to allow
Beth Agee to grab it, and Stotts flopped to the ground when she made contact. The ref ran in and awarded ASU a penalty kick that was converted by Victoria MacIntosh into the bottom left corner for the golden goal.
Â
The Red Wolves twice hit the crossbar in the first 15 minutes of the match with the first coming from Haley Husted and the second off the foot of Sarah Sodoma.
Emma Jones placed the first shot on goal for TXST early in the 13th minute.
Â
Also placing shots on frame for the Bobcats in the first half were
Renny Moore and
Wimberley Wright. Moore's came in the 34th minute and Wright's occurred with a little less than four minutes to go until halftime.
Â
Wright had a great opportunity halfway through the 71st minute when the ASU goalkeeper kicked the ball right to her. However, too much of a touch on the ball was enough for the keeper to recover and grab the ball.
Â
Ally Kewish placed a perfect ball into the box in the air with 10 minutes left on the clock.
Mackenzie Smith got behind the Red Wolf backline and flicked a header to the bottom left corner, but the goalkeeper just got her fingertips on the ball to push the ball out for a corner kick.
Â
The only shot attempt in the first overtime period came from Sodoma nearly two minutes in. Her low attempt from a tight angle was smothered by Agee.
Â
Leading Texas State with two shots apiece were Kewish, Moore and Wright with the latter two placing both attempts on goal.
Â
Agee made five saves on the afternoon. She now has 60 saves on the season, which ranks 10th on the program's career list. She is also three stops shy of the second most saves by a freshman in a campaign.
Â
Next up for the Bobcats is a rematch with Little Rock on Sunday, Oct. 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
