Smith’s and Wright’s Goals Propel Bobcats Past Trojans

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Goals from Mackenzie Smith and Olivia Wright with under 15 minutes to play propelled the Texas State soccer team (3-8-1, 3-4-0 Sun Belt) to a 2-1 come from behind victory Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Soccer Complex over Little Rock (2-5-1, 2-3-1 Sun Belt).

Nearly a minute into the contest, Sydney Kammer a Trojan defender on a through ball from Kayla Streber to get a shot off. Her attempt was kept out as the goalkeeper got her leg out just in time.

Streber followed up on the rebound and was able to draw a foul just outside the box. Renny Moore placed the free kick on goal that was caught by the keeper.

Off a throw-in from Emma Jones, Wright got a shot off in the box that saw the LR keeper have to make a diving save to keep the match scoreless with nearly three minutes left in the half.

About 90 seconds later, Astros Luckas threw the ball into Bergros Asgeirsdottir, who passed it back to Luckas. A pass to Doro Greulich followed and the senior unleashed a high shot from about 30 yards out that dipped under the crossbar to put the Trojans up 1-0.

Off a free kick late in the 62nd minute, Moore sent the ball in from the left corner of the 18-yard box. The Little Rock defense was unprepared for the quick kick, which allowed Smith to be open at the 6-yard box but her flick flew over the crossbar.

A loose ball fell to Emma Jones and she passed it ahead to Wright. The San Antonio, Texas native beat one defender and was then tripped up by a second defender just outside the box. However, the ref held his whistle and Wright popped up, beat a third Trojan defender to the ball and ripped a shot with her left foot into the bottom right corner of the netting for her first collegiate goal and tie the match 1-1.

The next five minutes saw Little Rock attempt four shots with the best look coming from Greulich. She got her head to the ball on a cross but it sailed wide right of frame.

Midway through the 85th minute, Greulich had another opportunity to put the visitors back ahead. The senior turned and unleashed a rocket of a strike that smacked off the crossbar and out of bounds for a goal kick.

Exactly a minute later, Smith sent the ball into the box from just in front of the Bobcats' bench. Moore slid and got her foot on the ball, but saw it glance off the keeper and just past the post for a corner kick.

Kammer quickly threw the ball in deep in the attacking zone to Smith. After a touch, a defender knocked the Cypress, Texas native to the ground inside the box for a penalty kick. Smith slotted the penalty kick into the bottom left corner to give the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage with just over two minutes left on the clock.

The rest of the match saw Texas State keep the ball almost entirely in the near corner to run out of the clock.

An 18-12 advantage in shots and 10-2 in shots on goal was held by the Bobcats. Pacing the team with three shots was Kiara Gonzales, Moore and Smith. Attempts two shots apiece were Kamaria Williams, Kammer and Wright.

Beth Agee made one save on the afternoon.

Next up for TXST is the regular season finale against ULM. Kickoff for the Senior Day match is 1 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
