Old Southland Conference foes renew rivalry

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State football team (1-3) finishes off non-conference play with a clash against former Southland Conference rival Nicholls (2-1) at 6 p.m. on Sept. 28 at Bobcat Stadium. The two teams last played on Oct. 1, 2011 in a Bobcat victory, 38-12.

SETTING THE SCENE
- Texas State enters the contest coming off a thrilling 37-34 triumph over Georgia State in triple overtime. The win marked the first Sun Belt Conference home victory for TXST since defeating ULM by a score of 16-3 on Nov. 19, 2015. The win was the first in the head coaching career of Jake Spavital and vaulted the Bobcats into the top spot in the Sun Belt Conference standings with a 1-0 league record.
- Senior linebacker Bryan London II turned in an historic outing against Georgia State with 22 total tackles to tie former Bobcat stalwart and current New York Giant linebacker David Mayo for the most tackles in a single game in program history. He ranks fifth in program history with 208 solo stops during his four-year run with the Maroon and Gold and is tied for fourth in school history with 388 total tackles.
- Fellow senior linebacker Clifton Lewis Jr. boasted a career-best 10 tackles against Georgia State. He tallied a team-high 2.0 tackles for loss and chipped in a quarterback hurry.
- Sophomore running back Caleb Twyford helped Texas State find a ground attack that eluded the offense in the first three weeks of the season. Twyford carried the ball 27 times for 132 yards, both career highs, while senior tailback Anthony D. Taylor secured a pair of rushing scores in the win.
- For the second-straight contest, sophomore cornerback Jarron Morris recorded an interception. He slid in front of the GSU wide receiver on an out route to secure his third career INT one week after picking off a wide receiver screen play against SMU.

SCOUTING THE COLONELS
- Nicholls State, the No. 9-ranked Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program, opened the 2019 season with a 49-14 setback on the road at Kansas State before securing back-to-back victories over Prairie View A&M (42-35) and Stephen F. Austin (48-30). All three games to begin the '19 campaign have been away from John L. Guidry Stadium for the Colonels.
- Sophomore running back Julien Gums has carried the Colonel offense in the early stages of the season with 55 rushing attempts for 277 yards and five scores. He ranks 22nd in the FCS with 92.3 yards rushing per contest and is tied for eighth in rushing touchdowns.
- Senior quarterback Chase Fourcade has completed 70.7 percent (41-of-58) of his passing attempts and has compiled 206.6 total yards of offense per game (175.3 passing, 31.3 rushing) with seven total touchdowns through three contests. His top receiving threat, junior wide receiver Dai'Jean Dixon, ranks 22nd in the FCS with 95.7 yards per game. He has accumulated at least four catches and 60 yards in each of his first three games this season.
- The defensive unit is led by senior linebacker Allen Pittman. He leads the Colonels with 9.3 tackles per contest and has been credited with 2.0 tackles for loss, one sack, and one fumble recovery.

SERIES HISTORY
- The storied history between the two programs dates back to the 1980 season. The Colonels hold a slim 16-14 lead in the series, Texas State has the 9-7 advantage against Nicholls in San Marcos.
- Texas State won the last matchup in the series by a final score of 38-12, the largest margin of victory for the Bobcats in the series, on Oct. 1, 2011.  
- The Bobcat defense turned in a dominant effort in the victory as the unit held Nicholls to 208 total yards of offense (3.2 yards per play) and forced a pair of turnovers. Michael Ebbitt led a relentless pass rush that collected seven sacks on the evening. Ebbitt compiled 4.0 sacks for the Bobcats.
- Former Bobcat great and NFL defensive back Darryl Morris snared a 37-yard touchdown on an interception return. Morris, and the rest of the defensive backfield, held Nicholls to 11-of-28 passes (39.3 percent) for 105 yards.

ROWLAND EARNS SUN BELT CONFERENCE ACCOLADES
- Graduate transfer kicker Joshua Rowland was tabbed Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts in the conference-opening victory over Georgia State.
- Rowland secured 13 points in the kicking game and made the game-winning field goal in triple overtime.
- He made three field goal attempts which included a season-long 45-yard make to open the scoring in the first quarter. Rowland converted all four of his extra-point attempts and averaged 63.7 yards on six kickoffs with four touchbacks.
