SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman
Bailey Peschel scored the lone goal of the match as the Texas State soccer team defeated Incarnate Word 1-0 in the regular season opener at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
With the victory, the Bobcats are 1-0 on the season while the Cardinals begin the year 0-1. It also extended TXST's undefeated streak to 14 matches, tying the program record that was set from Sept. 21 to Nov. 9, 2008.
UIW controlled match for most of the first half. The Bobcats started to push press on the visitors late in the period.
Genesis Turman threw the ball-in in the attacking third to
Karlee Torisk. The freshman turned to beat a defender and sent in a cross that Peschel ran onto and slammed home into the bottom right corner for her first collegiate goal.
In the second half, the Bobcats were able to get into final third but unable to get many shots off. One of the best opportunities came in the 84th minute when
Jordan Kondikoff sent a long ball down the middle of the field.
Kaylee Davis ran onto the ball for a breakaway opportunity but the Cardinals goalkeeper made a diving stop right as the senior got her attempt off near the top of the box.
TXST outshot UIW 13-11 and held a slim 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Davis led all players with five shot attempts but only place one on frame.
Sarah Everett put both of her shots off free kicks on goal.
Heather Martin started in goal and made one save in the first half to earn the victory. It is her 26th career win and moves her into sole place of second on the program's career list, breaking a tie with
Caitlynn Rinehart (2012-15).
Kathryn Budde recorded two stops in the final 45 minutes.
The regular season opening weekend concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against Prairie View A&M at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Prior to the contest, the 2018 Sun Belt Conference regular season championship team will be recognized.
