SAN MARCOS, Texas– Former Texas State University men's basketball student-athlete and National Champion Rudy Davalos will soon be inducted into the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2019 Aug. 17 at the Alamo Convocation Center.
 
Davalos, a 1956 Edison High School graduate, is one of six former SAISD athletes who will be enshrined, including Rudy Bernal, Larry Collins, Adriane Lapsley Butler, Diz Reeves and Gilbert Salinas.
 
The 5-9 talent was a point guard for the Edison Golden Bears and was the team's leading scorer during his four-year tenure. He was named to the all-state basketball team as a senior after leading his team to a district championship as well as a Class 4A state championship in 1956.
 
Davalos brought that winning tradition to the Bobcats from 1958-1960 under legendary head coach Milton Jowers. During Davalos' time, Southwest Texas State posted a 56-10 overall record, including a 26-2 Lone Star Conference mark that was capped off by a NAIA National Championship after defeating Westminister (Pa.) 66-44 March 12, 1960. Rudy Davalos is also the father of Doug Davalos who coached the Bobcats from 2006-2013.
 
Rudy embarked on his collegiate basketball coaching career as a graduate assistant at Kentucky (1962) before being named as an assistant coach at Auburn from 1963-70. Davalos took his first head coaching position in 1970 at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee where he spent three seasons.
 
In 1973, Davalos became an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs and held that position three years before changing courses, becoming the first athletic director at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1976. In addition to fundraising for the athletic department and beginning the school's sports programs, Davalos also selected the school's first fight song.
 
Davalos left the Roadrunners after a decade to become the associate athletic director at the University of Houston in 1986 and was promoted to the athletic director position in 1987. In 1992 he took the same position at the University of New Mexico and stayed there until he retired in 2006. In his honor at UNM is The Rudy Davalos Basketball Center which is the men's and women's basketball practice facility that includes offices and study halls that he helped fundraise for as the athletic director.
 
The SAISD Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2014 and its committee annually recognizes past district graduates for their exceptional sports achievements and program contributions. The SAISD Hall of Fame Wall is located on the visitor's side of Alamo Stadium and features bronze plaques of all those enshrined.
