Bobcats Stun 12th-Ranked Aggies 5-3 Behind Big First Inning

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A five-run first inning was all the Texas State baseball team (21-12) need to shock 12th-ranked Texas A&M (25-9-1) Tuesday night in front of 4,771 hostile fans at Blue Bell Park. The victory is the first for the Bobcats in College Station since Apr. 11, 2006.

TXST jumped on the Aggie's starter Dustin Saenz early as Jaylen Hubbard sent the first pitch of the game into the left center field gap for a double. After a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Shuffield moved Hubbard to third, Saenz walked the next two batters to load the bases.

Hubbard faked stealing home and got Saenz to balk to bring him home for the first run of the game. After a walk to Will Hollis reloaded the bases, John Wuthrich blasted a 1-1 pitch into the netting behind the left field wall for a grand slam and put Texas State ahead 5-0.

TAMU was able to load the bases on two singles and a walk with no one gone in the bottom half of the inning. Garrett Herrmann was able to get out of the jam without allowing a run by striking out the next two batters and then inducing a ground out to back to himself.

The Aggies recorded three straight singles to start the bottom of the fourth with Aaron Walters plate the first run of the game for the home team. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, which paid off for TAMU as Bryce Blaum hit a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the lead to three. A single back up the middle from Chandler Morris plated another run to make it a 5-3 contest.

In the bottom of the seventh, TAMU got two batters on after a passed ball on the third strike and a hit by pitch. Connor Reich rebounded to strikeout the next batter and induce a fly out to end the ending.

The Bobcats had a chance to add an insurance run when Felipe Rodriguez led off the frame with a double down the left field line. However, the Aggies closer Kasey Kalich got the next three batters out to keep it a two-run game.

Hunter McMahon came on walked the first batter he faced. The sophomore right-hander rebounded by striking out Blaum, getting Morris to fly out to center and then inducing a ground out to Ryan Newman at first to end the game.

Picking up the victory on the mound was Brent Hebert as he improves to 2-1 on the season after he threw a perfect fifth inning. McMahon earned his first save of his career. Suffering the loss was Dustin Saenz (2-1) as he only got one out but gave up all five runs on two hits and three walks.

Garrett Herrmann started and went 3.1 innings with three strikeouts while giving up three runs on seven hits. Throwing a scoreless inning out of the bullpen was Nicholas Fraze, Brandon Lewis and Connor Reich.

Hollis record a team-high two hits and one of the team's four extra-base hits. Wuthrich's grand slam was the first of his career and first homer of the season.

Next up for the Bobcats is a Sun Belt Conference series at Georgia Southern that begins on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CDT.
