Six-run seventh propels TXST softball over UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas State softball team (21-17) rallied late to down the UTSA Roadrunners (17-22) at Roadrunner Field on Wednesday evening by a score of 8-6. Texas State registered six runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the comeback win.

KEY MOMENTS
- Texas State struck first and scored one run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Tara Oltmann singled up the middle. She promptly stole second base and raced around to score on a single from junior infielder Hailey MacKay and a UTSA error.
- UTSA found an offensive rhythm in the bottom of the third inning. The Roadrunners secured a one-out walk, a two-out bloop single, and a three-run home run from senior outfielder Bailee Baldwin.
- Freshman catcher Caitlyn Rogers cut the UTSA lead in half in the top of the fourth inning. She smashed a solo home run to left field to make the score 3-2 in favor of the home team.
- The Roadrunners managed to get the run back in the bottom of the fifth inning. UTSA put the pressure on the Bobcats with some small ball. The defense momentarily cracked to allow an unearned run to plate on a fielding error.
- Texas State scored six runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning to seize control of the game. The biggest hit of the frame came on a bases-load double from freshman pinch hitter Cassie Valdez. The extra-base hit scored a pair.
- The home team plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh to bring the final tally to 8-6 in favor of the Bobcats.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Sophomore pitcher Meagan King (13-8) continued her winning ways in the circle. She has won nine-straight decisions. King finished with a line of 7.0 innings pitched, three earned runs, a pair of walks, and three strikeouts.
- Texas State piled up 11 hits, including multi-hit games from junior outfielder Christiana McDowell, senior outfielder Mari Cranek, MacKay and Valdez. Both the latter players notched two RBI.
- Bobcat hitters did not strike out in the game and walked five times.

NOTABLES
- McDowell recorded her 46th hit of the season in the top of the third inning. That figure ranks as a career-high in a single season for McDowell.
- The home run hit by Rogers in the top of the fourth inning marked the first of her young collegiate career. She became the seventh Bobcat to homer this season.
- The victory is the first for the Bobcats in which TXST entered the seventh inning trailing. Texas State had previously won only one ballgame in which the team trailed after four innings.
- With the win, Texas State tied the all-time series at 43-43 between the two schools. The Bobcats avenged a season-opening 3-2 loss at the hands of the Roadrunners.
- The contest was tabbed the #SetTheExpectation game as part of Sexual Awareness month. Both teams wore ribbons in support of the organization. Founder Brenda Tracy threw out the first pitch prior to the game.

ON DECK
- The Bobcats will return to Sun Belt Conference action with a three-game weekend series against Coastal Carolina. The set will begin at 3 p.m. CT on April 12 at St. John's Stadium.
