King delivers 1-hit gem in 2-0 victory over UIW

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State softball team (12-15) defeated the Incarnate Word Cardinals (2-19) behind a dominant effort in the circle from sophomore pitcher Meagan King on Wednesday afternoon at Bobcat Softball Stadium. The Bobcats won 2-0.

KEY MOMENTS
- Sophomore infielder Tara Oltmann secured the first run of the ball game on an RBI double to left field. The hit scored junior infielder Bailee Carter from second base in the home-half of the first inning.
- Sophomore infielder ArieAnn Bell doubled the Bobcat lead in the bottom of the third inning. She laced a single into right field to score freshman pinch runner Molly Damiani from second.
- Texas State left the bases loaded in two separate innings. The first time came in the first trip to the plate for TXST, while the second came in the bottom of the fourth inning.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- King (6-8) kept the Cardinals bats confused all game. She pitched a complete game (7.0 innings) and allowed only one base runner, a single in the top of the first inning. She retired the final 19 batters she faced and came up with six strikeouts.
- Outside of the run-scoring hits produced by the Bobcats, Texas State only managed one hit in the game. Freshman pinch hitter Caitlyn Rogers secured her fifth hit of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- TXST drew eight walks as a team and was hit by one pitch. The Bobcat offense did not record a strikeout, however the team did leave nine runners on base.

NOTABLES
- Texas State improves to 12-3 all-time against the Cardinals. The Bobcats have won five-straight matchups between the schools dating back to March 23, 2016.
- King was economical in her work in the circle. She threw 74 pitches through seven full innings and tossed 60 strikes. Her 81.8 percent strike rate was the highest figure of any Bobcat pitcher this season.
- Her strikeout total eclipsed the season-high she had previously established against UTSA to open the 2019 season. She also set a new benchmark for fewest hits allowed in a game with at least 5.0 innings of work.
- With her first-inning RBI, Oltmann broke a tie with junior infielder Hailey MacKay for the team lead in RBI. Oltmann ranks tied for eighth in the Sun Belt with 22 runs batted in this season.

THOUGHTS FROM THE DUGOUT
- "Right now our game is about momentum," head coach Ricci Woodard said. "I thought we did a great job early on both sides of the ball. Obviously, Meagan attacked the zone early and often. We made things happen on the bases to give us some energy. This was a great start for our week."

ON DECK
- The Bobcats will hit the road for a three-game weekend series against conference foe ULM from March 22-24 at ULM Softball Complex.
