Athletics has some exciting things happening this spring and I want to take a moment to share some of them with you.
When spring semester classes begin next Tuesday, the university will open a new Primary Medical Care and Sports Medicine facility for Texas State students on Thorpe Lane. This facility provides Bobcat student-athletes an more convenient and alternate location next to our football and track facilities. One of our team physicians,
Dr. Bryant Frazier, is one of the physicians servicing the new facility.
Our track and field teams have begun competing in their indoor season the last two weeks and I want to take a moment to congratulate Leslie Romero on setting a new school record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:51.31. She surpassed the previous mark by over three seconds! The men and women's teams will compete in the Sun Belt Championships Feb. 18-19 in Birmingham, Ala.
The men's basketball team is enjoying a historic season with a 14-3 overall record. The start is the best for the Bobcats since winning the NAIA national championship in 1959-60. They have a 3-1 Sun Belt Conference record and a No. 22-ranking in this week's
College Insider Mid-Major poll. It is the fifth straight week they have been ranked. I hope you have a chance to watch them play this weekend in Strahan Arena against Little Rock tonight at 7 p.m. and Arkansas State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
I am looking forward to welcoming our women's basketball alumni back to campus for our game against Georgia Southern on January 26. There will be a social and chalk talk beginning at noon in the Maroon and Gold Room. In addition the former players are invited to take a tour of the University Events Center and will receive complimentary tickets to the Georgia Southern game, where they will be recognized during the contest. If any former players haven't sent in their RSVP, please contact
Don Coryell at
dc32@txstate.edu or 512-245-2220 by Wednesday, January 23.
The Bobcat Club hosts a National Signing Day Dinner on February 6 at the Embassy Suites-San Marcos. A cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. and the program will start at 7 p.m.
Brant Freeman will serve as emcee and our new head coach
Jake Spavital and his staff will introduce the 2019 signing class.
Coach Spavital will also meet with fans at receptions in Austin, San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas beginning February 20. Dates, times and locations will be announced shortly.
Finally, there was an article published last Saturday in
The Journal Now about the Sun Belt Conference's success in bowl games for the third straight year. The article points out that the Sun Belt Conference will receive $17.2 million from the College Football Playoff's revenue payout in 2018. That total is the third highest figure among the Group of Five conferences. If you would like to read the article, click

In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at these special events.
Sincerely,
Dr. Larry Teis
