SAN MARCOS, Texas – Kat Conner, the only head coach in Texas State soccer history, earned her 200
th career win Sunday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex as the Bobcats downed Arkansas State 2-1. Netting both goals for TXST was junior
Kaylee Davis with one coming in each half.
Â
The Bobcats improved to 6-5-1 on the season, the first time they are over .500 this year, and continue to sit atop the Sun Belt Conference standings with a 4-0-1 record. It is the best conference start for the team since 2009. The Red Wolves dropped their second straight match to fall to 5-4-2 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play.
Â
Davis had the first opportunity on goal for Texas State and took full advantage late in the 10
th minute. The junior received a pass from
Kayla Geren and was able to beat the center defender to unleash a shot from inside the 18-yard box that flew into the right netting.
Â
It was the sixth consecutive match that Davis has scored a goal to tie the school record set by Britney Curry from Sept. 6-25, 2009. For Geren, it was her first collegiate assist.
Â
Davis had another great look on goal in the 14
th minute. However, her attempt went just over the crossbar for a goal kick.
Â
Two minutes later, the Allen, Texas native nearly scored again from distance. Her shot hit off the hands of the goalkeeper and appeared to be on its way to cross the line. Unfortunately, spin on the ball after hitting the keeper's hands caused the ball to go sideways and away from danger.
Â
Renny Moore had a chance to increase the lead in the 22
nd minute. The sophomore picked up a bad clearance and caught the goalkeeper off her line, but her attempt flew by the wrong side of the left post.
Â
The biggest scare from ASU in the first half came in the 39
th minute when they took a free kick from 40 yards out. Riley Ebenroth's attempt from long range hit off the corner of the left post and crossbar before bouncing out of bounds.
Â
In the 60
th minute, Geren sent in a cross from the left side that.
Mackenzie Smith read it perfectly and was about to head the ball into the back of the net until the keeper grabbed it out of midair.
Â
Two minutes later, Davis sent a low, hard cross across the goal that Geren was able to get a foot on while battling a defender. Her attempt slide past the right post for a goal kick.
Â
Davis netted her second goal of the match in the latter half of the 63
rd minute. She ran on to a through ball from Smith down the left side and smacked the ball into the right side of the net. Also getting credited with an assist on the score was
Kelly Barbalias.
Â
ASU appeared to be out of it until halfway through the 78
th minute. Taylor Schneider blasted a header high and just out of the reach of
Heather Martin's hands off a corner kick from Ebenroth to cut the Bobcat advantage to 2-1.
Â
The Red Wolves were the aggressors for nearly the rest of the contest trying to net a tying goal. Davis nearly sealed any chance of an ASU comeback in the 88
th minute. She ripped a shot from the left that hit off the goalkeeper and then ricocheted off the left post. The keeper was able to recover and smother the ball before Davis was able to get there to punch in the loose ball.
Â
Davis led all players with five shots and four shots on goal. Her two goals gave her 10 for the season and moves her into a tie for eight on the program's single-season list with Allison Crain, who reached the mark in both the 2003 and 2000 seasons. With her fourth match-winning goal this year, Davis is now tied for fifth in school history. She now has 17 goals since transferring to Texas State which places her in a tie for eighth in program history with Natalie Holder (2003-06),
Kassi Hormuth (2014-17) and
Lauren Prater (2013-16).
Â
In goal, Martin made three saves on the afternoon with all of them coming in the first 45 minutes. Her victory between the posts was the 20
th of her career to become the fourth Bobcat goalie ever to reach the mark.
Â
TXST plays its next three matches on the road beginning on Friday, Oct. 5 at Appalachian State. Kickoff for the contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT.
