SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State football team opens the 2018 season on the road for the third time in four years when the Bobcats play a non-conference game at Rutgers on Saturday, Sept. 1. The battle between the Bobcats and Scarlet Knights begins at noon ET/11 a.m. CT in HighPoint.com Stadium.
 
The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network with Chris Vosters calling the play-by-play and Shaun O'Hara serving as the analyst. The contest also airs on 1300 The Zone in Austin, KTSW in San Marcos, AM 930 The Answer in San Antonio and TuneIn.com with Brant Freeman and Bill Culhane calling the action from the press box and Karina Medellin reporting from the sidelines.
 
Series vs. Rutgers
Texas State and Rutgers will meet for the first time on Saturday. This marks the third time that the Bobcats have played a team from the Big Ten Conference. The Bobcats lost 42-0 at Minnesota on Aug. 31, 2002 and 42-35 at Illinois on Sept. 20, 2014.
 
Scouting Texas State
Texas State is looking to win its third straight season-opening contest and sixth season-opener since joining the NCAA Division I FBS ranks in 2012. The Bobcats are 63-45-3 all-time in season-opening games.
 
Texas State has 18 returning starters from last season with seven on offense, nine of defense and two on special teams. The Bobcats have 46 lettermen returning from 2017. They include 18 lettermen on offense, 25 on defense and three specialists.
 
This marks the third time in the last four years that Texas State will open a season with a road game. The Bobcats played at Florida State in 2015 and at Ohio in 2016 before hosting Houston Baptist in 2017.
 
The Bobcats will be looking to win their third straight season-opening game under head coach Everett Withers, who is looking to improve his head coaching career record to 5-1 in season-opening games after leading the Bobcats to wins at Ohio and against Houston Baptist.
 
Texas State announced that Aaron Brewer, A.J. Krawczyk, Bryan London II and Tyler Watts have been elected team captains for the 2018 campaign. Brewer and London II are preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team selections. Brewer led the Bobcats with 68 knockdown blocks. London II is a team captain for the second straight year and led Texas State with 91 tackles. Krawczyk ranked third on the team with 74 tackles in his first season as a starting safety, while Watts tallied 40 receptions for 332 yards and two touchdowns in 2017.
 
Scouting Rutgers
Rutgers begins its 149th season of competition since 1869. The Scarlet Knights are 75-64-9 in season-opening games and 97-39-10 in home openers.
 
Rutgers begins its third season under head coach Chris Ash after the Scarlet Knights won four games overall and three Big Ten Conference contests last year.
 
The Scarlet Knights return 16 starters from last season with seven on offense, eight on defense and one specialist.
 
On The Horizon
Following its season-opening game at Rutgers, Texas State returns to Bobcat Stadium and hosts Texas Southern on Sept. 8. The Bobcats open their Sun Belt Conference schedule on Sept. 15 when Texas State travels to South Alabama.
