SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State senior women's golfer
Sarah White is set to compete in the 2018 U.S. Women's Amateur. The event will be held Aug. 6-12 at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tenn.
"This is the first of many USGA championships for Sarah," head Texas State women's golf coach
Lisa Strom said. "Since becoming a Bobcat, she has been coachable and hard-working. I am excited to see a lot of this hard work pay off. It will be a great week for her and I wouldn't be surprised to see her go deep into match play."
White finished the 2017-18 campaign with a scoring average of 75.58 (4.26 strokes above par per round) to finish third on the Bobcats. She counted towards the team score in 29 of the 31 rounds she played and recorded six rounds at or under par. Her best finish of the season came at the UTRGV Invitational on March 6, placing fourth with a 54-hole score of 1-over-par 214.
The par-71, 6,365-yard course designed by Tom Fazio will host 156 competitors. A tournament record 1,468 entries were accepted from the 23 sectional qualifying locations from June 25 through July 18. To be eligible for acceptance, each golfer must have retained amateur status and hold a Handicap Index that does not exceed 5.4.
White qualified for the tournament on July 2 after shooting a 69 at the Birmingham Country Club in Birmingham, Mich. The native of Grand Rapids, Mich., won the event by two strokes, topping Pinya Pipatjarasgit, a recent high school graduate on her way to continue her playing career at Brown University. Three additional golfers from the BCC event qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur, including: Elayna Bowser of Loyola University Chicago, Stephanie Bunque of Victorian Institute of Sport and Allyson Geer of Michigan State.
"I am excited to represent Texas State during the US Women's Amateur," White said. "This is an amazing university that I would call a hidden gem. I hope I get a chance to let people see just how amazing Texas State is and what we have to offer."
The players will compete in back-to-back stroke play rounds on Aug. 6-7 before being trimmed to 64 players. The Round of 64 will be played via match play rules. The final day of competition, Sunday, Aug. 12, will host the Championship Match.
