Texas secures series finale against Texas State

Paul hits career-high fourth homer, Bobcats continue final stretch of 2018

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas State baseball team suffered a 6-2 setback to No. 15 Texas Tuesday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Bobcats dropped to 25-26-1 on the year, while the Longhorns improved to 34-18. The game spanned nearly five hours thanks to a two-hour lightning delay that halted play in the fourth inning.

TXST opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but the home club plated two in the home half of the frame to take the lead for good. UT tacked on an additional three runs in the second, and the two teams added an extra tally in the seventh.

Juniors Jonathan Ortega and Jaylen Hubbard both went 2-for-4 to lead Texas State at the plate. Senior Dylan Paul raked his career-high fourth home run of the season.

Senior Cam Baird (2-2) started on the mound and suffered the loss after conceding five runs on five hits in 1.0 inning. TXST used six relievers, and they combined to allow just one run on five hits across the final 7.0 frames.

Matteo Bocchi started for Texas and gave up one run on five hits in 4.0 innings to collect a no-decision. Bryce Elder (6-1) tossed the next 3.0 frames and gave up one run on four hits to earn the win.

David Hamilton went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs to pace the Longhorns. Ryan Reynolds finished 2-for-3.

The Bobcats will now hit the road for the final contests of the regular season. The maroon and gold will face UTA May 17-19 in Arlington, Texas.
