Softball Headed to Los Angeles Regional

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State softball team (42-14, 18-5 SBC) will continue its season as the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional. The Bobcats will play No. 3 seed Cal State Fullerton at Easton Stadium on Friday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. CT. The Regional pairings were announced on a national ESPN2 telecast.

UCLA, the top seed in the four-team, double-elimination Los Angeles Regional, will host fourth-seeded Sacramento State at 10 p.m. CT on Friday. The Bobcats and Titans will face off on the WatchESPN app while the Bruins, the No. 3 national seed, vs. Hornets game will air on ESPN2.

For ticket information, fans can visit the official UCLA website HERE. Ticketing information will be released on Monday.

The Bobcats and Titans have met five times on the softball diamond. The last meeting between the programs came in a 4-2 Fullerton victory in San Diego, Calif. in 2014. Overall, the Titans hold a 3-2 series advantage over the Bobcats. Texas State and UCLA have met four times with the Bruins taking all four matchups. The two teams have not met in over 15 seasons. Finally, the Bobcats have played Sacramento State four times, each program winning a pair of games.

Texas State will compete in the program's eighth NCAA Regional under the direction of head coach Ricci Woodard (since 2001) and ninth overall, posting a 9-16 record in Regional play. The Bobcats are making a Regional appearance for the third consecutive season for the first time in program history. TXST went 1-2 as the three seed at the Tuscaloosa Regional in 2016 and finished 1-2 as the two seed in the College Station Regional a season ago. The program made a Regional in three of four seasons from 2009 to 2012.

The Bobcats entered championship week with an RPI of 31 and a strength of schedule ranking of 58. Texas State earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Regional round with a Sun Belt Conference Championship tournament victory.  TXST faced seven teams to receive a Regional bid, including three host institutions.

The winner of the Los Angeles Regional will face the winner of the Tucson Regional hosted by Arizona in a Super Regional. The Tucson Regional features Arizona, Mississippi State, North Dakota State and Saint Francis.
