Bobcats Hold Their First Spring Practice on Tuesday

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State football team kicked off its 2018 spring practice on Tuesday morning in Bobcat Stadium. It was the first of 15 scheduled practices that culminates with Texas State's annual Maroon-Gold Spring Game.

"It was a typical first day," head coach Everett Withers said. "There was some good, some bad. But, I thought the energy level was good and going into our third spring, the guys are starting to get what we are trying to get done every day for two hours. Not all of it is pretty, but we are competing and that is the main thing. We will review this practice, get better and practice better on Thursday.""

The Bobcats had 88 players practicing on Tuesday, the most players on Texas State's spring roster since Withers was named head coach on January 6, 2016.

Texas State has six returning starters on offense and eight returning starters on defense participating in spring practices. The offensive starters are running back Anthony D. Taylor, wide receivers Tyler Watts and Jeremiah Haydel, along with offensive linemen Aaron Brewer, Reece Jordan and Jacob Rowland. The defensive starters are defensive tackle Dean Taylor, nose tackles Sami Awad and Caeveon Patton, linebackers Bryan London II, Frankie Griffin, and Hal Vinson, along with cornerback Anthony J. Taylor and safety A.J. Krawczyk. Three more starters are sitting out this spring. They are defensive end Ishmael Davis and cornerback JaShon Waddy, who are recovering from surgeries, and offensive tackle Nic Foster who is in the concussion protocol.

"I am looking to find enough players out here so that we don't have to depend on guys we just signed to come in and help carry us through a season," Withers said. "I want us to be able to say that they (newly signed players) won't have to come in June and play against Appalachian State next fall. Instead, we can rely on them to provide depth. We are getting closer in terms of some depth in spots and understanding what it takes to compete in the Sun Belt Conference."

The Bobcats will continue working this week as they have three more practices scheduled. In addition to Thursday's practice, Texas State have practices slated for Friday and Saturday. The Maroon-Gold Spring Game featuring the offense playing against the defense is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on April 14 at Bobcat Stadium.
