Texas State Sweeps Day One of FAU Tournament

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Texas State softball team (8-4) swept day one of Florida Atlantic's "Strike Out Cancer" Tournament at FAU Softball Stadium in southeast Florida. In game one, the Bobcats caged Columbia (0-1), 6-2. In game two, TXST toppled host Florida Atlantic (6-6) by a score of 9-4.

GAME 1
TEXAS STATE 6, COLUMBIA 2

The Lions wasted little time finding a run, scoring a pair of runners in the opening frame of the game. Columbia put the leadoff runner on base via a walk and the next batter, Maria Pagane, crushed a home run. The Bobcat pitching staff allowed just one hit over the remainder of the game.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Bobcats ran into four runs, all with two outs in the inning. Mari Cranek started the rally with a single to shortstop and was followed by walks from Hailey MacKay and Ariel Ortiz. Tara Oltmann singled through the left side, plating both Cranek and MacKay. Ortiz also scored on the play on a fielding error from Columbia's left fielder. Oltmann advanced to third on the play and scored on a Bailee Carter single up the middle.

The Cats loaded the bases again in the fifth inning after Sierra Steimel singled up the middle, the Lions hit Ortiz with a pitch and then walked Oltmann. Once again, Carter delivered an RBI, plating Steimel on a single to left field. The run gave Texas State a 5-2 advantage heading into the sixth inning.

Ortiz added an insurance run for the Bobcats, scoring Haleigh Davis on an RBI single to third base in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The first two pitchers used by the Bobcats lasted just 3.2 innings and surrendered Columbia's only two runs. McKenna Fryar entered the game in relief with two away in the fourth inning. She cruised to the finish line, pitching the remaining 3.1 innings without allowing a hit.

GAME 2
TEXAS STATE 9, FLORIDA ATLANTIC 4

For the second straight game, TXST's opponent jumped on the scoreboard early. In the bottom of the first, FAU's leadoff hitter, Emily Lochten, smoked a solo home run to right-center field, giving the host Owls a 1-0 lead on Randi Rupp and the Bobcats. Two innings later, Lochten struck again, blasting another solo homer to right field to double FAU's lead.

The Bobcat offense struggled early, but broke out in the top of the fourth inning. Steimel collected her second hit of the game to lead off the frame. Christiana McDowell laid down a sacrifice bunt, reaching on an error by the second baseman. Steimel took advantage of the error, advancing to third on the play. Hailey MacKay, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, swatted a three-run home run to left field. MacKay has hit five home runs through the first 11 games of the season.

Texas State put up another crooked number in the fifth innings, scoring six runs on seven hits. Mari Cranek started a string of five straight hits for the Cats with a bunt single. Jaclyn Molenaar added an infield single while Steimel registered her third hit of the game to load the bases. McDowell singled through the right side, scoring Cranek and Molenaar. MacKay singled up the middle, plating her fourth and fifth RBIs of the game. With two outs in the inning, Oltmann tripled to score MacKay. Oltmann came around to score on an RBI single from Bailee Carter.

Rupp went the distance for the Bobcats, her eighth complete game of the season. The senior pitcher collected 11 strikeouts while yielding five hits, two walks and three earned runs.

The Bobcats will be back in action tomorrow, early, for an 8 a.m. CDT start time against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Game two of the day will be a clash with Dartmouth at 2:45 p.m. CDT. The final game of the tournament will start at approximately 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. The Cats will square off with Columbia in a rematch of the 6-2 win for Texas State.
