SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State University President Denise M. Trauth and Director of Athletics Larry Teis announced Sunday that
Everett Withers has been dismissed as the head football coach after three seasons with the Bobcats. Teis announced that
Chris Woods will coach the Bobcats in their final game against Arkansas State this Saturday.
"I met with Coach Withers this morning to inform him of the University's decision," Teis said. "We are thankful for his contributions to our program. His teams performed well academically and were heavily involved in the San Marcos community. But, we didn't have the same type of success on the field. We were close several times this season, but we just didn't win the games."
"We appreciate his three years of service to Texas State," President Trauth said. "We did the right thing academically and off the field, but the Sun Belt Conference is a tough league."
Named Texas State's 19th head coach, Withers was dismissed after posting a 3-8 record this season and a 7-28 record in three years as head coach at Texas State. The Bobcats were 2-21 against Sun Belt Conference teams during his tenure. Withers coached three All-Conference players and had eight players named Honorable Mention All-Sun Belt selections in his first two seasons. He also produced a CoSIDA Academic All-District Team member and the football team combined for 106 3.0 GPAs in the 2017-18 fall and spring semester.
Woods came to Texas State this season as the defensive coordinator after serving on the coaching staffs at Oklahoma for three years when the Sooners won three consecutive Big 12 championships and made two appearances in the College Football Playoff. He is in his 25th season in coaching and has served six seasons as a head coach and 13 years as a defensive specialist and coordinator in his career.
