Sun Belt Tournament Spot Clinched in 3-0 Victory at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – For the second straight year the Texas State soccer team became the first program to officially clinch a spot in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament following a 3-0 victory at Georgia Southern on Sunday.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 8-5-1 on the season and lead the Sun Belt standings by four points with a 6-0-1 record. The Eagles drop to 4-9-0 overall and 2-4-0 in conference play.

Nearly a minute into the contest, Kaylee Davis took a crack at goal that went wide left of frame. The continued pressure from TXST saw a breakthrough a few minutes later.

In the fifth minute, Jamie Brown was able to battle by two defenders to send in a cross from the left side from just inside the penalty box. Her cross found Davis, who hit a low shot past the goalkeeper and into the right netting for an early 1-0 advantage.

Nearly two minutes later Kayla Geren added to the score. She received a long pass from Davis and was able to shake a defender before ripping a shot into the upper portion of the net to increase the lead to 2-0. Also getting credit for an assist on the score was Renny Moore.

Moore nearly netted a score when Davis sent a shot pass across the box to the open sophomore. Her attempt clanked off the crossbar and away from frame.

In the 20th minute, Davis tallied her second goal of the match. The Allen, Texas native received a pass from Geren and unleashed a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar, hit the ground and bounced into the upper netting to make it 3-0.

The second half saw the Eagles hold a 12-3 shot advantage and were able to place four on goal. The biggest threat of the four shots on frame came in the 62nd minute. A long attempt heading towards the upper right corner saw Martin making a leaping save. It was historic for the junior as she surpassed Natalie Gardini (2007-09) for third on the program's career saves list.

A mishandle of the ball by a GS defender allowed Sydney Kammer to steal the ball in the 83rd minute. She battled through contact from two defenders and was able to get a shot off towards the left side of frame to beat the keeper. However, the ball rolled past the left post for a goal kick.

Davis led all players with five shots, all coming in the first half. She moved into a tie for fourth on the single-season with Jessica Armendariz (2000), Brittney Curry (2008) and Lauren Prater (2015). The Allen, Texas native now has 19 goals since joining the Bobcats to move into a tie for sixth with Erica Michaud (2008-11) and Armendariz in program history.

Martin finished with five saves to record her fifth shutout of the season and 11th in her career. Her season total is tied for the eighth most in a year and her career mark is tied for fourth with former assistant and player Lauren Frazier (2010-11).

The next match for Texas State takes place Sunday, Oct. 14 at Troy. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
