AUSTIN- When the State of Texas is in need, Texans answer the call. That's never been more true than now with the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey across the Texas Gulf Coast and catastrophic flooding in the Houston area. Texas State is joining forces with the University of Houston and six other FBS schools who have home games this weekend to to provide relief to the victims of the Hurricane in Southeast Texas. The other six schools include Texas, UTSA, Baylor, Texas Tech, SMU, North Texas and TCU.
Texas State Athletics is inviting Bobcat Fans to help fill up the Bobcat Equipment Truck on Thursday afternoon from 1-5 p.m. in South Austin at the Travis Roofing Supply Building (5010 Burleson Road, Austin, TX 78744)
. Student-athletes from the Houston Football program will collect items and load them into the trucks for a Friday morning convoy to the NRG Center in Houston.
The Cougars evacuated to Austin, and they are asking the nine FBS schools in Texas who are playing home games during the opening weekend of the 2017 college football season to make their equipment trucks available for a convoy to Houston.
Items needed for the collection are as follows:
Non-Perishable Food: PULL TOP canned vegetables, fruits etc.; ready-to-eat dry goods such as nuts, peanut butter, dried fruits, granola and trail mixes, jerky, ready-to-eat snacks; bottled water; ready- to-eat meals or MREs etc.
Personal Care Products: Antibacterial soap, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, lotion etc.
Cleaning supplies: Laundry detergents, general cleaner, sponges, bleach (powdered form is preferred), mops, scrub brushes, buckets, rubber gloves etc.
Paper products: Toilet paper, paper towels etc.
Baby and infant supplies: Diapers, wipes, diaper rash ointment, baby wash, baby shampoo, baby lotion, formula, etc.
First-Aid items: Bandages, gauze, pads, first aid tape, antiseptic creams, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, latex gloves, instant cold packs etc.
Blankets, towels, pillows, underwear, new or gently used clothing, etc.
For those wanting to help and can't make it to a collection point, you are encouraged to support the rescue and recovery efforts through charities on the ground including the Red Cross. The Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund will accept tax deductible flood relief donations. The fund is administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
