MOBILE, Ala. – The Texas State baseball team completed a series sweep after losing 7-5 to South Alabama in a Sun Belt Conference game Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field.
Â
The Bobcats (22-23, 9-12 SBC) lost their eighth in a row, while the Jaguars improved to 28-17 overall and 15-6 in the conference.
Â
TXST initially pushed ahead with a single tally in the third, but a two-run homer in the home half of the fourth flipped the script in favor of the Jaguars.
Â
USA then plated three runs without the help of a hit in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead 5-1, but Texas State scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie proceedings.
Â
South Alabama closed strong, plating the game-winning runs in the bottom of the eighth. TXST loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh and could only push one across. The maroon and gold was also able to place runners at the corners with no outs an inning later, but could not take advantage.
Â
Sophomore
Ryan Newman went 3-for-4 and had his most hits in April. He hit his fifth homer of the season in the sixth frame and landed a triple shy of the cycle. Junior
Dylan Paul continued his recent torrid pace with a 2-for-4 afternoon, while sophomore
Jaylen Hubbard drove in two teammates.
Â
Junior
Cam Baird earned a no-decision after giving up four runs (two earned) on just two hits across the first 4.0 innings. Senior
Joe Powell (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on two hits in 3.1 frames.
Â
USA starter Tyler Carr lasted 5.2 frames and was pulled after giving four runs on seven hits. Matt Peacock threw the last 3.0 innings to collect the win a day after tossing 2.1 frames in a save performance. He did not give up a run on three hits.
Â
Wells Davis finished with two hits, and he scored twice. Paul Russo finished with two RBIs.
Â
The Jaguars finished with just five hits, which was their fewest in a game since March 10 against Mississippi State and their second-fewest of the season. The Bobcats tallied 11 hits, which was their highest total in a game during their recent eight-game road trip.
Â
Â
Next up for Texas State will be the conclusion of its nine-game road swing. The finale will take the Bobcats to San Antonio for a meeting with UTSA at 6 p.m. May 2 at Roadrunner Field.
