SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State University softball team took a pair of wins in a mixed doubleheader on second day of the annual CenturyLink Classic on Saturday. The Bobcat offense went yard twice in the first game to defeat Iowa 2-0, then produced 10 hits in an 8-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
GAME 1
TEXAS STATE 2, IOWA 0
Back-to-back two-out home runs by
Jaelyn Young and
Taylor Webb broke open a scoreless game in the sixth and lifted Texas State to the 2-0 win over Iowa.
Texas State threatened with two out in the first as
Ariel Ortiz singled up the middle and
Corrina Liscano drew a walk. But, both would be stranded as Iowa's Elizabeth Wiegand got out of the jam with a chopper to first.
Iowa put its first runner on base in the third as McKenzie Schneider reached on a dropped third strike. However, Sarah Rupp atoned for her error two pitches later, throwing out Schneider on a steal attempt. R. Rupp then finished off the frame with her sixth strikeout of the game.
The Hawkeye's Allie Wood broke up R. Rupp's no-hit bid in the fifth with a leadoff line drive down the right-field line. She took second on Brooke Rozier's bunt. Two batters later Wood advanced to third on foul flyout to right, but R. Rupp ended the threat with a strikeout of Schneider.
Texas State loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but could not push across the go-ahead run. After
Sierra Steimel reached on a fielder's choice and
Bailee Carter reached on an error, Christian McDowell walked to load the bases, but Iowa's Wiegand escaped without damage by inducing another routine grounder to first.
After a one-two-three top of the sixth by R. Rupp in the circle, Texas State came alive at the plate with Young and Webb's back-to-back two-out homers.
R. Rupp (1-1) held the Hawkeyes to only two hits over her full game of work, while registering eight strikeouts and not surrendering a walk.
Wiegand (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle for Iowa, allowing both runs and four hits over 5.2 innings of work. Taylor MaKowsky pitched the final out.
GAME 2
TEXAS STATE 8, TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 0
Multi-run second and third innings defined Texas State's 8-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Bobcats blew the game open in the second with a four-run frame.
Kimberlin Naivar drove in
Kennedy Cline, who led off the inning with a single to left field, with an RBI fielder's choice. Seven pitches later
Ariel Ortiz hit her first home run of the season, giving Texas State a 5-0 lead.
Texas State added three more runs in the top of the third for an 8-0 lead.
Jaelyn Young led off with a single, and was pinch ran for by
Jaclyn Molenaar,
Taylor Webb then singled and Cline followed with an RBI single to left field. Two batters later
Bailee Carter drove in Webb with a shot down the right-field line. Cline followed with the innings' final run on an Islander error.
Texas State wasted little time scoring against the Islanders, scoring in the top of the first. Walks to
Christiana McDowell and Ortiz bookended a Naivar single to load the bases.
Corrina Liscano followed with a RBI ground out to first to, scoring McDowell. The Bobcats would be unable to push across additional runs as an awkward infield fly double play ended the inning.
Ortiz led the Bobcats with her three RBI, while both McDowell and Cline finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Jodi Paige Williams (2-0) pitched 3.0 scoreless inning to earn the win in the circle for TXST.
