SAN MARCOS, Texas –
Taylor Webb hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the first to erase an early two-run deficit and Texas State rolled from there for an 8-3 win over Abilene Christian in the final game of the annual CenturyLink Classic at the Bobcat Softball Stadium.
Â
Webb, who later added an RBI single, finished the day with five RBI to lead Texas State (4-1) at the plate.
Corrina Liscano and
Ariel Ortiz were 2-for-2 with two walks each, while
Jaelyn Young was 2-for-3 with a walk.
Â
Randi Rupp (2-1) earned the win in the circle, going four complete with five strikeouts, while giving up three runs on five hits.
Jodi Paige Williams worked 2.0 innings of scoreless relief before turning the ball over to newcomer
Krista Jacobs for a one-two-three seventh inning.
Â
Abilene Christian (3-3) opened the scoring in the top of the first with back-to-back two-out home runs by Peyton Hedrick and Holly Neese, staking the visitors a quick 2-0 lead.
Â
Texas State answered in the bottom of the inning in a big way as Webb sent Hannah Null's 3-1 offering over the left-field wall for a grand slam. Ortiz started the two-out rally as she reached on an error. After a walk to Young, Liscano singled through the left side to load the bases and set the stage for Webb's big fly.Â
The Bobcats added a run in the second as
Christiana McDowell sent a sacrifice fly to right, driving home
Haleigh Davis, who had doubled to left-center to lead off the inning.
Â
Texas State added two more runs in the third with
Kennedy Cline picking up a bases-loaded RBI on a single back up the middle and Davis walking with the bases full to bring home Liscano.
Â
Abilene Christian got a run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI single deep in the hole at shortstop by Brianna Barnhill, which brought home Neese. However, the Bobcats answered in the bottom of the inning on Webb's fifth RBI of the game – a single through the left side to drive home Ortiz – to establish the 8-3 score line.
Â
The Wildcats' Null (1-2) took the loss, giving up five runs (one earned) on three hits and issuing a walk. Krystian was charged with two runs in her 0.1 inning of relief. Casey-May Huff finished the game in the circle for ACU, going 3.2 and allowing only two hits.
