UTA Defeats Bobcats 61-39

SAN MARCOS, Texas – UTA used a 15-0 run that spanned the latter half of the third quarter and the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter to turn a two-point lead into 17 as the Mavericks defeated Texas State 61-39 in Sun Belt Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Strahan Coliseum.

The Mavericks (10-3, 3-0 Sun Belt) were led by Rebecca VanDijk's 30-point, 14-rebound double-double. VanDijk, the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year, was 13 of 18 from the field and 4 of 5 at the free-throw line in her 33 minutes on the floor. Aysia Evans scored nine for the Mavericks, while Cierra Johnson pulled down 10 rebounds. The visitors closed the game shooting 43.1 percent (25 of 58) and outrebounded the Bobcats 41-23.

McKinley Bostad led Texas State (6-8, 1-2 Sun Belt) with 10 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers. Amber Jones went 4 of 5 from the field and added a free throw for nine points. Ericka May was TXST's top rebounder with five. The Bobcats shot 32.6 percent (14 of 43) for the game with half their makes coming from three. The Texas State bench outscored its counterpart 24-15.

Texas State led 11-9 after the first 10 minutes of play. Three of the Bobcats' four field goals in the period came via the three ball, while UTA struggled to make only 4 of 17 attempts.

Erin Peoples and Kaitlin Walla each hit a 4-pointer in the opening 2:09 of the second quarter to extend the Bobcats' lead to 17-11. However, UTA would hold the Maroon & Gold scoreless over the next six minutes, while knotting the game at 17-all. Bostad converted two free throws with just under two minutes to play, breaking the Bobcats' scoring drought and providing a 19-17 lead. However, UTA scored the final seven points of the half as VanDijk scored twice inside and Evans hit a triple to push the visitors ahead 24-19 at the intermission.

UTA outscored the Bobcats 7-4 in the opening stages of the third quarter to take a 31-23 lead. Jones slowed the Mavericks momentum with a 3-point play and after an Evans layup, Leavitt connected from deep. Neither team scored for the next two minutes until Jones spun in a layup at the 3:41 mark to cut the visitors' lead to 33-31. The Mavericks then switched to a full-court press and stymied the Bobcat offense throughout the remainder of the third quarter, while piecing together a 10-0 run for a 43-31 lead. The Maverick run featured five points by Johnson, a layup by Shelby Richards and two free throws from Crystal Allen.

The Mavericks put the game away in the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter as VanDijk scored her 10th basket of the game and Christian Devers sank a 3-pointer from the right wing after a Bobcat turnover for a 17-point lead.  Texas State would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way as the Mavericks won their third straight game against the Bobcats.
