Texas State and SMU To Meet In 2019 and 2020

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State football program will play in Dallas for the first time since 2008 and SMU will play at Bobcat Stadium for the first time ever when the Bobcats and Mustangs open a home-and–home series in 2019 and 2020.

Texas State returns to Gerald J. Ford Stadium on Sept. 14, 2019, and the Mustangs will play at Bobcat Stadium on Sept. 19, 2020. The only other time the two schools met was on Sept. 6, 2008, when Texas State fell, 47-36, in Dallas.

"We are excited about playing SMU," said Texas State athletics director Larry Teis. "When we moved to the (NCAA Division I FBS), our goal was to play as many home games against in-state rivals as we possibly could. In the past, we had to travel to SMU and Houston without a return game. Now, we have SMU, Houston, UTSA, Prairie View A&M and Incarnate Word all coming to Bobcat Stadium. This gives their fans a chance to enjoy our beautiful facility and experience a game day in San Marcos."

When the Bobcats open their series against the Mustangs, it will be Texas State's second home-and-home series against a team from the American Athletic Conference.  The Bobcats begin their first home-and-home series at Houston on Sept. 26, 2015. The Cougars will play in Bobcat Stadium on Sept. 24, 2016. It marks Houston's first game in San Marcos since the two schools were members of the Lone Star Conference in 1946-48.

"We continue to have discussions with several other Texas schools and hope to finalize more agreements soon," added Teis. "Our goal is to not to leave the state of Texas for non-conference games. I think it is important to keep as much revenue as we possibly can inside the state. That makes financial sense and adds to the rivalries."
