Three Homers in Comeback Not Enough

Geisler and Hill Have Career Days

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Arkansas State scored six runs in the top half of the opening inning to take a commanding lead, but Texas State methodically fought back to eventually tie the game, 10-10, in the eighth inning after three consecutive two-run innings. Unfortunately, a go ahead run from ASU in the ninth inning proved to be what the Red Wolves needed to outlast the Bobcats Sunday for the 11-10 victory.

Texas State drops to 20-29-1 on the overall season and 12-15 in Sun Belt Conference action. Headed into the final regular season series against UT Arlington this weekend, with games at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 1 p.m. Saturday, the Bobcats will likely be playing for the right to compete at the Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament in Troy, Ala., May 20-24.

It wasn't for a lack of offense that the Bobcats dropped Sunday's game. Texas State struck 12 hits and scored 10 runs with four Bobcats knocking multiple hits and six finishing with at least one hit.

Cory Geisler had a career day for the Bobcats, knocking two home runs in the game for the first time in his collegiate career. He also added four RBI and four runs scored to notch career marks in both categories on a perfect 3-for-3 day with a walk and a hit by pitch. He wasn't retired in the game. It was his second home run of the game that tied it at 10-10 and his first homer in the sixth to pull the Bobcats within three runs at 9-6.

Tanner Hill also hit a home run in the game, his eighth of the season. He knocked his in the seventh inning to make it a 10-7 game. He finished 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBI and a run. After that, Ben McElroy hit a double to right field and scored on a groundout double play to make it a two-run game, 10-8. McElroy finished 3-for-5 while David Paiz knocked two hits in the game.

After Geisler tied it in the eighth, bringing Jared Huber in after a leadoff walk, ASU was able to score the go ahead run in the top of the ninth. Stuart Levy was able to reach on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A base hit through the left side from Lucas Fedderson plated Levy on Feddersen's only RBI of the game for the final score of 11-10.

The Bobcats had a chance in the bottom of the ninth inning, pushing a runner all the way to third base with no outs. With Derek Scheible at third base and Paiz at first, Texas State was looking to tie the game on a safety squeeze from Mickey Scott. Arkansas State was ready. Pitcher Tyler Zuber barehanded the ball and got it to the catcher in time for the first out of the bottom of the ninth. A strikeout and a groundout later ended the game.

Texas State showed some resiliency to come back from a 6-0 deficit. The Bobcats answered the onslaught with a run in the bottom of the first. Geisler led off with a single and Cedric Vallieres bunted for a single behind him. After a walk to load the bases, Geisler was able to score on a sacrifice fly from Hill.

In the second inning, the Red Wolves gave the Bobcats three consecutive free bases with walks for Luke Sherley and Vallieres and a hit by pitch for Geisler. Sherley scored on a bases loaded groundout, and then a double down the left field line from Hill plated two more to pull the Bobcats within 6-4.

Arkansas State scored a run in the third inning, and then it quieted down until the sixth. The Red Wolves were able to score three runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Bobcats tallied six runs across the sixth, seventh and eighth innings behind the work of Geisler and Hill to tie the game. Unfortunately, Feddersen's RBI proved to be enough in the top of the ninth to win it for ASU.

Texas State will look to bounce back against UT Arlington with games scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
