LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Texas State soccer team earned its first victory of the 2014 season on Sunday afternoon, defeating the New Mexico State Aggies by a score of 2-1. The Bobcats improve to 1-0-1 on the young season.
Kassi Hormuth and
Tori Hale each recorded their first goals of the season.
"I'm really proud of my players," said head coach
Kat Conner. "It was a struggle to have the same intensity as Friday night, but I'm proud of the way they bounced back and found a way to score the second goal."
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the third minute of the contest after Hale connected on a pass from 25 yards out. The game proceeded to stay at 1-0 through the end of the first half.
In the 47
th minute, the Aggies got the goal back, tying it up on a header in front of the net.
Texas State battled back, however, by scoring just 12 minutes later to regain the lead over New Mexico State. The Bobcat offense put together an ideal run that presented
Jourdan Brown with an opportunity to attack the net. Brown's shot was saved by New Mexico State goalkeeper, but on the rebound Hormuth scored her first goal of the regular season to give Texas State the lead.
Conner made mention that
Maddie Nichols was key in the victory for the Bobcats.
"
Maddie Nichols mentally checked in and really got us together on our style of play," stated Conner.
Texas State now improves to 2-0 against the Aggies all-time.
The Bobcats will return to San Marcos for the home opener next Friday as they prep to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. Live stats, live video, and live audio will be available at
