SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State women's golfer
Lora Assad continued her hot streak, capturing another title, at the Ekurhuleni Championship at Benoni Country Club in South Africa. It marked the third top-three finish of the year for Assad, after finishing as the runner-up at the South African Championship last week and winning the Gauteng North Match Play Championship in July.
Assad won the event by firing a final round 71 to come from six strokes behind for the win. She finished the event as one of two Bobcats in the top 10, joining
Lejan Lewthwaite, who placed in a tie for ninth.
Assad's torrid summer has placed her amongst the elite of the amateurs in the world, as she entered No. 313 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking system heading into the event, and should move up substantially following her title.
Assad is one of five players who will be returning for the Bobcats this fall off last year's team which qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the third straight year. She was named to the All-Sun Belt Second-Team in April. She had three top-10 finishes on the year, including a tie for ninth at the Sun Belt Tournament.
