Texas State and UTSA Begin 8-Year Series In 2017

San Marcos, Texas – Former conference foes Texas State and UTSA announced Friday morning that the two schools would begin playing a long-term home-and-home football series beginning in 2017.

Texas State athletic director Larry Teis and UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey announced that the two schools would meet at Bobcat Stadium on Sept. 23, 2017 and in the Alamodome on Sept. 22, 2018.

"I am excited that the I-35 rivalry we started many years ago in all of our sports will have eight years on the football field," said Teis. "Our first game at UTSA drew nearly 40,000 fans in 2012 and both schools realize the importance and benefits of playing one another. We want to thank Lynn Hickey and her staff for working with us to begin a long-term series with UTSA."

"With the proximity and similarities that we have, this could develop into a special college football rivalry," added Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione. "It will be a great game for the fans of both schools to watch."

Texas State and UTSA will play again beginning in 2020 when the two teams start a six-year home-and-home series on Sept. 12, 2020 at Bobcat Stadium. The two schools also will meet on Texas State's home field on Sept. 10, 2022 and Sept. 7, 2024.

Texas State and UTSA will return to the Alamodome on Sept. 11, 2021, and play there on Sept. 9, 2023 and Sept. 6, 2025.

"Our fans like to have home games against other schools from Texas or marque FBS programs from around the country," said Teis. "We have been able to play Texas Tech and Wyoming in Bobcat Stadium and will host future games against UTSA, Houston, Navy, Southern Miss and Tulsa."

Texas State played Texas Tech in 2012 and Wyoming in 2013. The Bobcats will host Houston in 2016 before beginning its eight-year series against UTSA in 2017. In addition, Texas State also plays non-conference home games against Navy in 2014, Southern Miss in 2015 and Tulsa in 2018.

Texas State and UTSA previously played one time on Nov. 24, 2012, when both were members of the WAC. The game drew a crowd of 39,032 at the Alamodome.
