Arlington, Texas – UT Arlington came out red hot in the second half and erased an eight-point Texas State halftime lead as the Maverick men's basketball team beat the Bobcats 69-62, Saturday evening at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.
The Bobcats played strong defense in the first 20 minutes, limiting the Mavericks to 6-of-20 shooting (30 percent), allowing Texas State to take a 33-25 lead into half. Texas State held UTA's leading scorer in check during the first half, as Reger Dowell scored only three points in the first half. Unfortunately the clamps would not hold and Dowell went off in the second half, scoring 20 points after halftime to finish with a game-high 23. UTA outscored the Bobcats 44-29 in the second half.
Texas State was done in by the three-pointer in the second half, as UTA was 7-of-10 from downtown, accounting for 21 of its 44 second half points. The Bobcats on the other hand, shot just 2-of-10 from three-point range in the second half. Wes Davis and Reid Koenen finished as the team's top three-point shooters for the night with two made threes apiece. The duo began the game with back-to-back threes which accounted for the team's first six points.
Individually Davis and Joel Wright led the Bobcats in scoring at 12 and 11 points respectively. Wright tied Emani Gant as the team's leading rebounder with four. Wright also contributed four assists, no turnovers and three steals.
Right before half, Texas State looked to hold for the last shot. Wright had the ball just inside the arc on the right wing and took a fade away just before the buzzer went off for his only points of the first half, allowing the Bobcats to take the eight-point lead into intermission.
The Bobcats return to the floor on Monday as part of another doubleheader in Atlanta, Ga., to take on Georgia State in a rescheduling of last Thursday's game which was postponed due to weather.
