SAN MARCOS, Texas –Just two days after upsetting the Sun Belt Conference preseason favorite, the Texas State women's basketball team returns to Strahan Coliseum for conference game number two against the Arkansas State Red Wolves. This will be the first ever meeting between the Bobcats and the Red Wolves.
Prior to the start of the season, the Red Wolves were picked to finish third in the Sun Belt Conference. Along with the third place preseason ranking, Arkansas State earned two spots on the all-conference teams, led by senior forward Jane Morrill with a first-team bid. Sophomore forward Jalen O'Bannon earned the second Arkansas State spot as she landed on the third team.
The Arkansas State women's basketball erased a 10-point second half deficit and then held on as UT Arlington missed a 3-pointer in the game's final seconds to give the Red Wolves a 66-62 victory over the Mavericks in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams Thursday night. Jane Morrill led the Red Wolves in the contest against UT Arlington with 21 points and eight rebounds
Sophomore guard Aundrea Gumble has been a key offensive threat for the Red Wolves during the non-conference season, averaging 17.8 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game. She has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week two times so far this season.
Last season, the Red Wolves finished with a 15-15 overall record and 12-8 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. With the 12-8 mark last season in conference play, the Red Wolves finished in second place in the West, just two games behind UALR.
Arkansas State is under the direction of head coach Bryan Boyer. Boyer, who is in his 15
th season at the helm of the Red Wolves, has established himself has the winningest coach in Arkansas State history.
