Each of Texas State’s 16 Athletic Teams Exceed NCAA-Mandated Score of 900 Through 2011-12

Indianapolis, Ind.  – The NCAA announced Tuesday afternoon that each of Texas State's 16 athletic teams exceeded the NCAA-mandated APR multi-year rate of 900 through the 2011-12 academic year by at least 46 points.

The Academic Progress Rate is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team.  The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years. Next year, the NCAA will raise the minimum score to 930.

Last week, the NCAA announced that the women's golf and tennis teams had perfect multi-year scores of 1,000. In addition, seven other teams exceeded scores of 970 and five more teams had scores above 950.

Texas State also enjoyed its best single academic year in 2011-12 as eight teams posted scores of 1,000.
Those teams include men's cross country, men's indoor and outdoor track, men's golf and women's golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball squads.

“I am very proud of our student-athletes, coaches, along with the Academic Services and administrative staffs,” said Texas State athletics director Larry Teis. “We have made tremendous strides in our athletic and academic accomplishments.  Texas State University prides itself with a strong academic mission, and athletics is making tremendous strides with our academic accomplishments. That is a very important component.

“When you talk about wins and losses in athletics, not enough attention is given to the wins in the classroom.  We are proving that we are true classroom champions.”

The goal of the NCAA's academic performance program is improvement, not punishment. Not only does the program ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but also it provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school.

This year marks the ninth year of APR data for most teams. The APR is a multi-year rate based on the most recent four years of data.
