Logan, Utah – Both sides committed 19 turnovers tonight, but it was Utah State who came out on top 77-61. The Aggies led by as many as 26 points midway through the second half, but the Cats closed in on the home team and found themselves with 10 points in the final minutes.
Senior Vonn Jones scored a career-high 19 points, including five triples. Junior Phil Hawkins added nine points and eight assists, while Joel Wright and Basil Brown finished with eight apiece.
Texas State missed its first-five shots before Wright hit an outside jumper to give the Bobcats their first bucket of the game with 14:21 to go in the first.
The Bobcats showed effort from start to finish, but their shots fell short in the first half. Texas State was 4-for-23 from the field to start the game, but improved in the second half to go 15-for-33 from the floor.
Jones took command of the game for Texas State and rattled off 11 straight points in two minutes to force the Aggies to call a timeout despite a home lead of 48-31. He then nailed his fourth triple of the game to continue the Bobcats scoring rhythm.
The offensive spurt of Jones started to spill over to his teammates and the Bobcats began to get under the skin of the Aggies.
Hawkins began to find openings in the paint and Wright was aggressive under the basket as Texas State continued to fight and trim the Aggies lead.
A layup by Basil Brown cut Utah State's lead to 12 points, and then Jones connected on his fifth triple of the night to trim the Aggies lead to 71-61 with 1:14 remaining.
Unfortunately, time ran out in the Bobcats comeback and the Aggies escaped with the victory at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Spencer Butterfield led the Aggies with 10 points and 20 rebounds. Jarred Shaw also had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ben Clifford finished with 13 points, while Marcel Davis added 12 points.
The Bobcats will face San Jose State on Saturday, March 9 in its final Western Athletic Conference regular season game. Tip-off at Spartan Center is slated for 9 p.m. CT.
