Men’s Hoops Falls to #3 New Mexico in WAC Tournament Semifinals

Las Vegas, Nevada – No. 7 Texas State fought hard from start to finish, but it was No. 3 New Mexico State that came away with the win tonight to advance to the championship game tomorrow. The Bobcats finished the season, 12-22, while the Aggies improved to 23-10.

Joel Wright finished with 17 points, and a new WAC Tournament made free throws record of 31 throughout all three games this week. He also had 11 rebounds to record his sixth double-double of the season. Deonte' Jones added 16 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while Matt Staff chipped in 13 points. Texas State shot 34.5 percent from the floor and 75.9 percent from the free throw line.

“I'm extremely proud of our team from the way they battled,” said head coach Doug Davalos. “They followed our game plan. Our priority was to take away their top two shooters, and we did. Their core guys stepped up and made some plays. It's unfortunate we didn't make enough shots because I thought our defense was up there.”

New Mexico State started the second half on 10-3 run before the Bobcats began to catch a rhythm and come back strong.

Wright recorded a layup with 12:30 to go in the game to become the fifth player in school history to eclipse the 600-point mark in a single season. The bucket cut New Mexico State's lead to 12, as he helped jump start a Bobcat comeback.

The momentum traveled to Jones as he registered back-to-back treys to clip the Aggies lead to 55-48. A pair of free throws by Reid Koenen brought the Bobcats to within five points with 9:22 remaining.

Texas State made some crucial shots down the stretch, but the Aggies were able to match the Bobcats as they traded points.

The Aggies took a 10-point lead on a pair of free throws by K.C. Ross Miller with 2:30 left to play. With a few made jumpers and a few free throws New Mexico State was able to capture the win and advance to tomorrow's championship game.

New Mexico State led the entire first half, but he Bobcats remained within an arm's reach most of the time. With both teams in the bonus, there was plenty of time spent at the free throw line as time winded down.

Texas State trailed by as many as 12 points with three minutes and thirty seconds to go in the first half, but the Bobcats were able to trim it to nine points as they headed into the locker room.

Sim Bhullar recorded a double-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Renaldo Dixon finished with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Ross-Miller added 12 points and five assists.
