Las Vegas, Nev. – Senior Diamond Ford had a phenomenal game, but the Bobcats came up just short in Ford's final game at Texas State, falling 73-63, Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the WAC Tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
The Bobcats began the game much the way it ended Saturday's red-hot from the field. Texas State was shooting 55.6 percent (10-of-18) through the first 10 minutes of the game. The hot offense coincided with the team leading for the majority of the half, with Texas State up by as much as seven in the first seven minutes of the game.
Leading the charge for the Bobcats early in the game was Ashley Ezeh who had three early offensive rebounds to go with seven points. She was helped by All-WAC First-Team player Diamond Ford who matched her early production with seven points.
Denver was able to make a run, tying the game at 27, with just over five minutes to go in the first half. The Pioneers took advantage of nine first half Texas State turnovers, to end the period with a 33-32 lead.
Denver came out of the half strong taking a six-point lead at 40-34. Ford had one of the highlights of the day hitting a step-back three to tie the game at 44-44. With the three she set the new Texas State single-season scoring record over Carlotta Fisbeck's previous mark of 633. Ford finished with 644 points this year, and moved into second place all-time with 1,920 points.
The Pioneers quickly went on an 11-4 run to take a seven-point lead with 12 minutes to go in the second. After the Bobcats cut the lead to 63-59 with 4:30 to go, the Pioneers went on another 5-0 spurt to go back up 68-59 with 3:32 to go.
The Bobcats finished the season 10-20.They will say goodbye to seniors Ford, Bree Dawson and Morgan Passino. Next year the Bobcats will be in the Sun Belt Conference after the one-year stay in the WAC.
