Houston, Texas – Texas State dropped a pair of games today as it opened its season at the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic. The Bobcats fought hard today, but gave up runs in the seventh inning of both games to drop to 0-2 to start the season.

Texas State played Iowa in its first game of the season this afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium. The Bobcats entered the seventh inning with a 4-1 advantage. The Hawkeyes were able to record a two-run homer and a two-run double to score four runs and take a one-run lead.

The Bobcats had a chance in the bottom of the seventh when Haley Lemons registered a leadoff single. Katie Doerre recorded a sacrifice bunt to push Lemons over to second, resulting in the first out of the inning. Two batters later, Jordan Masek was walked to give the Bobcats runners on first and second with two outs. Macie Hair then grounded out for the last out of the game.

Six different Bobcats recorded a hit in the game, while Lemons finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. Anne Marie Taylor (0-1) fanned eight batters in the loss.

In game two of the day, Texas State fell behind early when Houston hit a solo homerun in the top of the second inning. The lead would not hold for long, as Masek homered down the left field line to tie the game at 1-All.

Houston was the first team to break the tie when Deidre Outon hit a two-out single to drive in a pair of runs and give the Cougars a 3-1 edge.

The Bobcats continued to fight, and were able to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but they came up short at Cougar Softball Stadium.

Four Bobcats recorded a hit in the game. Freshman Ashley Wright (0-1) struck out a pair of batters in her collegiate debut.
