San Marcos, Texas – An acrobatic layup by Ayriel Anderson towards the end of overtime was not enough as the Texas State women's basketball team fell to old rival UT Arlington, 73-72, Thursday night in Strahan Coliseum. The Bobcats have now split the season series with the Mavericks each of the last two years with the road team winning all four games.
Down 71-67, the Bobcats went on a 5-0 run over the last three minutes of overtime to take a 72-71 lead. Diamond Ford had three of her game-high 26 points in the OT session and with 28 seconds to go, the defense drew to Ford on the left wing, allowing Anderson to cut through the middle for a go-ahead layup. Unfortunately the Mavericks were able to respond, hitting a layup that went around the rim and in with 4.1 seconds to go for the eventual 73-72 lead.
Texas State had a chance to win the game in regulation, when Ford drove the baseline with two defenders converging towards her. She made a quick pass to a cutting Erin Peoples who laid it in for the 65-63 lead with 17 seconds remaning. UT Arlington answered on the ensuing possession when Chautandra Williams answered with a driving layup of her own to tie the game at 65-65 at the end of the second half..
Earlier in the game, the Bobcats seemed to be in control when Anderson and Raven Burns hit two three pointers to give Texas State a 40-30 lead at halftime. That lead increased to 44-32 early in the second half before the Mavericks rallied to force the contest into overtime.
The Bobcats will next be in action on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., against Louisiana Tech, as they host their annual Pink Game, in an effort to provide more awareness to breast cancer. It is also part of National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
