San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State softball team fell to Sam Houston State in extra innings this afternoon at Bobcat Stadium. The Bearkats topped Texas State 9-6 to earn the win.
A three-run blast by Hillary Adams in the first inning gave the Bearkats a 3-0 lead to start the game.
Texas State would soon have its chance to bat, and with Katie Doerre at the plate Sam Houston State walked her with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first to send Kellie Baker home.
Three innings later, Jordan Masek recorded her second homerun of the season when she hit one over the left field wall to give Texas State its second run of the game.
The Bearkats responded in the fifth inning with a two-run homer over the right field wall by Kim Damian to extend their lead to 5-2.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Katie Doerre was walked, followed by a two-run homer by Delia Saucedo to cut Sam Houston State's lead to two runs. Masek kept the momentum going with a single to shortstop, and then Brook Keel singled down the right side to put runners on first and second. Next, Kellie Baker lined one right up the middle to send Masek home and tie the game at 5-All.
Neither team was able to score in the sixth or seventh resulting in extra innings.
With the international run rule in place, Sam Houston State capitalized with a leadoff double to score its first run of the eighth inning. After a single by the Bearkats placed runners on first and third, Cecilia Castillo homered to left field to give Sam Houston State a 9-5 advantage.
Texas State scored one run in the eighth inning, but it wasn't enough to grab the win.
Rayn House (0-3) pitched 3.0 innings in the circle and was handed the loss. Lemons and Masek tallied two hits apiece.
Texas State will face UT Arlington tomorrow at 3 p.m. in its final game of the Texas Shootout.
