Softball Drops Two on First Day of Texas Shootout

San Marcos, Texas – Texas State softball dropped its first-two games of the Texas Shootout today at Bobcat Stadium. The Cats fell to North Texas 1-0, before dropping a 10-2 decision to No. 25 Baylor.

Game 1

Texas State had multiple chances to score in the game, including in the second inning when it stranded three runners on base.

Jordan Terry led the third inning off with a single down the left side and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. With Terry on third base after a groundout by Miller, Lesley Hirsch hit an RBI single to past third base to give the Mean Green the game-winning run.

Wright (2-3) suffered the loss in the circle after allowing one earned run in 4.1 innings in the circle. Four Bobcats tallied one hit apiece.

Ashley Kirk (2-3) picked up the win for the Mean Green, while Lauren Poole was credited with the save.

*Note: The game was halted for 14 minutes in the seventh inning due to a power outage at Bobcat Stadium.

Game 2

The first-three innings saw up-and-down play by both teams, but it would be the fourth inning that would get the game moving.

Baylor began the fourth inning with back-to-back singles, followed by an RBI double by Sarah Smith to go up 1-0 on Texas State. Baylor's second run came on a sacrifice fly by Robin Landrith. A walk, followed by a fielder's choice that resulted in an error by the shortstop saw the Bears with bases loaded and one out. Baylor tallied its next two runs on a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch to take a 4-0 lead. The Bears scored their next three runs on a sacrifice fly, RBI single, and an RBI double to extend their lead to 7-0.

The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs. An RBI double by Katie Doerre scored Brooke Baker for Texas State's first run of the game. Haley Lemons scored the next run on an error by the catcher to give Texas State its final run of the game.

The Bears added three more runs in the top of the inning to extend their lead to eight and put the run rule in place. Texas State was not able to power out any more runs as it fell to the Bears 7-2 in six innings of play.  

Delia Saucedo (0-3) pitched 2.0 innings in the loss. B. Baker went 2-for-2 with one run scored.

Whitney Canion (6-1) struck out four batters in 4.0 innings of work.

Texas State will continue play tomorrow in the Texas Shootout with a game versus Texas Tech at 3:30 p.m.
