SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State softball lost its series finale with the Marshall Thundering Herd 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened:Â
Kaili Witherell started in the circle for the Bobcats, striking out two batters but surrendering both runs, beginning with a solo home run on the second batter of the day. She ended the first inning with her two strikeouts. The Bobcats were retired in order in the bottom half of the inning.
Witherell gave up two singles for the Thundering Herd to score the second run before head coach
Ricci Woodard opted to bring in Maddy Azua. Azua pitched the rest of the game, surrendering just one hit and one walk while striking out three batters. Texas State was retired in order again in the second inning.
Kat Zarate led off the third inning with a walk, she came around to score after a
Megan Kelnar walk,
Sami Hood sac bunt and a
Keely Williams single. That was the Bobcats' lone run of the game.
Azua gave up her lone hit of the night in the 4
th, but the runner was left stranded after a ground out.
Texas State was able to get hits in the 4
th and 5
th, but stranded runners and were unable to score. In the 6
thinning,
Sydney Harvey had the defensive play of the game, robbing a home run from Marshall's Diamond Leslie.
In the end, though, Texas State was unable to put any runs on the board despite having two runners on in the 7
th.
After today's 2-1 loss, Texas State is now 21-15 on the season and 4-5 in Sun Belt play.
