San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team were unable to maintain a scorching start from the field, and fell to I-35 rival UTSA, 74-65, Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center in San Antonio. Ashley Ezeh made her first appearance in over a month and finished with 13 points and three rebounds.
The Bobcats came out hot, attacking the basket for layups on eight of their first 12 points. Up 12-8, the team got even more of a spark as Ezeh made her first appearance in over a month.
Even with the additional inside presence, the Bobcats stretched their lead using the three-ball thanks to Ayriel Anderson's two-three-pointers, followed by a right wing Diamond Ford three, to make it a 24-12 lead. Texas State opened the game shooting 12-of-14 from the field and Ford had 11 of the team's first 28 points.
Anderson's third three of the half was a step-back, giving her 11 points at the time, and the Bobcats their largest lead of the game to that point, 38-23, with 3:30 to go in the first. Texas State opened up the game 16-of-20 from the field (80 percent). The team finished the first half shooting 77.3 percent (17-of-22) and owned a 40-33 lead heading into the break.
UTSA began the second half run continuing a run from the first half, on a 28-6 run, giving the Roadrunners a 51-46 lead over the Bobcats with 12:51 in the second.
UTSA kept the surge going hitting a right wing three to give the Roadrunners a 63-51 lead with 6:40 to go.
The Bobcats made a late 6-0 run to cut the lead to 72-63 with 1:21 to go, but the Roadrunners responded hitting a layup to push the lead back to 11, sealing the game.
The game will be the last conference game for two weeks, as the Bobcats will head to Houston Baptist Wednesday for a nonconference game.
