Bobcat Softball Splits on Day One of Louisiana Classic

Lafayette, La. – The Texas State softball team split day one of the Louisiana Classic. The Bobcats fell to Louisiana-Lafayette 9-1 in six innings, before grabbing a 7-5 win over Mississippi Valley State for the first victory of the season.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored one run in each of the first-three innings to take grab a 3-0 edge.

The Bobcats struggled in the early innings as they weren't able to hit the ball out of the infield, but still remained within arm's reach of Louisiana.

The Cajuns added on another run in the fifth inning, before a powerful sixth inning saw the home crowd belt out five runs, including a three-run homer to go up 9-0 on Texas State.

The Bobcats would not be held hitless as Kellie Baker recorded Texas State's only hit of the game in the sixth inning. Baker singled to center field to push Anna Hernandez home from third to help Texas State register its first and only run of the game.

Anne Marie Taylor (0-3) suffered the loss in the circle today. Taylor fanned six batters in 6.0 innings of work.

Mississippi Valley State capitalized on a Bobcat error in the first inning as it took a 1-0 lead to start the game.

Kellie Baker got things started for Texas State with a leadoff walk. Baker advanced to second on a sacrifice by Timishia North, and then made it to third base on a passed ball. Haley Lemons was also walked, before Baker scored on an illegal pitch. Courtney Harris singled to center field and made it all the way to third on a fielding error by Devils which resulted in Lemons reaching home plate. Harris would eventually make it home on an illegal pitch by the Devils as Texas State took a 3-1 lead after the first inning of play.

After a quiet second inning, Anna Hernandez hit a three-run homer to give Texas State a 6-1 lead over Mississippi Valley State at the end of the third inning.

The Devils recorded a solo homerun to right center in the fifth, but Texas State responded with another run in the sixth inning to go up 6-2. Mississippi Valley State fought back in the seventh inning in which it tallied a two-run homer and a solo homerun, but it wouldn't be enough to grab the win.

The win over Mississippi Valley State is the first of the season for Texas State. Both teams tallied nine hits apiece, but the Devils had three errors to the Bobcats one.

Ashley Wright (1-2) captured her first collegiate win in the circle. The freshman battled 6.0 innings and fanned five batters. Delia Saucedo picked up the save. Baker, Lemons and Harris all tallied two hits each in the game.

Texas State will wrap up the Louisiana Classic tomorrow with a pair of games versus Louisiana-Lafayette and Mississippi Valley State.
