Soccer Picks Up 1-0 Shutout Over Georgia State

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State soccer team picked up its second conference victory on Friday evening after senior Kelsie Townsend connected off of a corner kick by Tori Hale to make it a 1-0 final against Georgia State.

With the 1-0 shutout, the Bobcats improve to 5-5-2 overall and are still undefeated in conference play, owning a 2-0-1 mark.

After 88 minutes of scoreless action, Texas State was presented with its eighth corner kick of the evening by the Panther defense. Hale set up for the corner on the right side of the field and sailed a pass right in the direction of Townsend to head it into the goal. The goal was Townsend's first of the season.

The Bobcats maintained possession throughout most of the first half, but the defensive efforts of the Panthers denied Texas State of getting on the board. Freshman Maddie Nichols was a key factor in the first half for the Bobcat defense as she made several stops to potential offensive drives for the Panthers.

Texas State finished the first half with eight total shots and four on goal. Lynsey Curry led the team in shots in the first half with two. Both of those shots were on goal for the sophomore.

The second half was a more balanced half by way of ball possession as Georgia State found itself with more control than the first half. Once again, the Bobcat defense stepped up big, denying the Panthers of any ample scoring opportunities.

Natalie Gardini ended the contest with four saves along with picking up the shutout. Texas State outshot the Panthers 16-9 in the game and recorded four more corner kicks.

Coach Conner named the team's MVP's at the conclusion of the contest.

Offensive – Kelsie Townsend

Defensive – Ali Jones

MVP – Tori Hale

Texas State returns to action on Sunday as it plays host to Western Kentucky at 1 p.m. The Bobcats welcome the New Braunfels Youth Soccer Association to Sunday's game.
