Women's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker in Overtime 73-70 to Denver

Diamond Ford scored 26 points and the Bobcats made 10 three-pointers, but it was not enough as the Texas State women's basketball team fell 73-70 in overtime to Denver, Thursday night at Strahan Coliseum.

 

Down by three with 2.8 seconds to go, Texas State got the ball to Ford in a play reminiscent to the end of game situation on Saturday against San Jose State. Ford got the ball just beyond the arc and stepeed back before firing a shot towards the rim, but it went just off to the left, giving Denver the 73-70 victory.

 

Texas State was up 59-53 with 3:00 remaining in regulation before Denver started to come back. The Pioneers cut the lead to 59-57 with 1:32 to go, before Ford hit a jumper just beyond the free throw line to extend the lead back to 61-57.

 

Denver's Maiya Michel made a layup  to bring the deficit back to two with 59 seconds to go in regulation. After the two teams traded free throws, the Pioneers hit two more foul shots with 20 seconds to go to tie the game. Kaylan Martin attempted a jumper in the lane with six seconds to go but it was just a bit strong.

 

Texas State went on a 7-0 run midway through the second half to break a 40-40 tie and take a seven-point lead. Raven Burns each hit a three and Ford added a jumper and two free throws during the stretch.

 

Texas State will continue its two-game WAC homestand on Saturday against New Mexico State at 2:00 p.m.
