Arlington, Texas – Texas State women's basketball team was able to come away with their first WAC victory Saturday, beating UT Arlington 63-57, Saturday night at the College Park Center in Arlington. The Bobcats used a strong defensive effort, holding the Mavericks to just 32.4 percent from the field (22-of-68).
Up just 55-51, the Bobcats were able to get a shot clock violation called on UT Arlington after Erin Peoples was able to get her hand on a ball to prevent the Mavericks from getting a clean shot off. From there Ayriel Anderson hit a layup in traffic and a free throw down the stretch, as the Bobcats did not allow the lead to get under four down the stretch.
The Bobcats had a shutdown effort on the defensive end to begin the game. Texas State were able to force 11 turnovers and allowed the Mavericks to shoot just 25.9 percent (7-of-27) in the first half. Jasmine Baugus led the defensive effort coming away with three steals and grabbing three rebounds.
Due to the strong defensive effort the Bobcats were able to jump out to a 22-14 lead. After UT Arlington started to come back a bit, Ayriel Anderson grabbed an offensive rebound in a crowd of defenders and put back a layup with 8.1 seconds to go before halftime to give the Bobcats a 28-20 halftime lead.
Erin Peoples continued her strong play from Thursday night, with 10 points and five rebounds in the first half. She also picked up a block and a steal in the first 20 minutes as part of the aforementioned defensive effort.
Bree Dawson had one of her biggest baskets of the season, hitting a left corner three early in the second half to give the Bobcats their largest lead of the game to that point at 33-22.
Dawson hit another huge three with 2:30 to go. Up just 52-48, she hit a right corner three to give the Bobcats a 55-48 advantage.
Texas State will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2:00 p.m., in San Marcos, to take on I-35 rival UTSA.
