San Marcos, Texas – It was a tough night for Texas State as it fell to visiting Louisiana Tech, 84-67, at Strahan Coliseum. The Bulldogs stayed one step ahead of the Cats to remain undefeated in league play.
Joel Wright was the Bobcats' top offensive producer with 24 points and seven rebounds. Guards Wesley Davis and Deonte' Jones added 14 and 11 points, respectively. Texas State (4-13, 0-5 WAC) was 27-for-62 from the floor (43.5%) and 5-of-13 from the free throw line (38.5%).
The Bobcats got beat down low with Louisiana Tech (13-3, 4-0 WAC) taking a 54-37 advantage on the boards. The Bulldogs had twice the amount of rebounds as the Cats at the half, and continued its solid defense all night.
Despite being down by 17 points at the half, Texas State wasn't ready to give up. The Bobcats rattled off a 9-0 run when Wright hit back-to-back shots, followed by a jumper in the lane by Phil Hawkins and a layup by Matt Staff to bring Texas State to within seven points.
From then on out the two teams traded points, which did not help Texas State's cause. Raheem Appleby hit a jumper for the Bulldogs to make it a double digit lead with 12:01 to go. LA Tech remained ahead of the Cats and made shots down the stretch to capture the victory tonight.
The Bulldogs shot 42.7 percent from the floor and 84.6 percent from the free throw line. Louisiana Tech was led by junior Cordarius Johnson who finished with 17 points after going 5-for-9 from three-point range. Appleby chipped in 14 points, while Jaron Johnson added 10 points. Kenneth Smith was successful on the defensive end grabbing 10 rebounds for LA Tech.
Texas State will host UT Arlington on Saturday, Jan. 12. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
