San Marcos, Texas – In a rematch of the 2011 Southland Conference Championship, the Texas State soccer team came up short, 1-0 to Stephen F. Austin, due to a penalty kick in the last 10 minutes of regulation in a 0-0 game.
With just over seven minutes remaining Kylie Louw of Stephen F Austin had a ball in the Texas State 18-yard box. She was taken down by a Bobcat defender, awarding her a penalty kick. Louw converted on the kick for the game's only goal.
The Bobcats first opportunity of the night came 15 minutes in when Tori Hale collected a ball near the SFA endline. She passed back to Lynsey Curry who sent a ball towards the goal as Taylor Person was making a run. Unfortunately, Person could not catch up to the ball as it went across the endline for a goal kick.
With five minutes remaining in the first half, Texas State had another opportunity. On its second consecutive corner kick, Texas State got the ball right in front of the goal. Gabbi Cottee unleashed a header towards the goal, but it went just over the crossbar.
Curry again had a chance with 14:30 left in regulation. She dribbled towards the middle of the field and ripped a shot from 25 yards out that was on a flight path for the net, but continued to sail just high. She also made a run in the seconds following SFA's goal, but her shot went wide.
Defensively, Texas State hung tough throughout the contest. Around 10 minute mark, Louw had a shot right in front of the goal, but Natalie Gardini got in position to stop it. Gardini finished the evening with six saves, including five in the second half.
Texas State will be right back at it Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., against McNeese State at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The Bobcats are 4-0-1 against the Cowgirls in the last five meetings.
