Soccer Ties Houston Baptist 1-1

The Texas State soccer team tied Houston Baptist, 1-1, Friday night at Sorrels Field in Houston. With the tie, the Bobcats remained unbeaten against HBU, moving to 4-0-1 all-time against the Huskies. It was the first time the two teams had gone to overtime since 2008.

 

Serena Hines scored her first goal of the year in the 29th minute of the first half, to take a 1-0 lead for Texas State. Lynsey Curry connected on her first career assist, sending a beautiful leading pass to Hines who evaded the goalkeeper and put it in the back of the net.

 

Houston Baptist tied the game with 35 minutes left in regulation. Huskie forward Natalie Hager collected a rebound off the post from Molly Missimer and got it past Natalie Gardini, evening the score.

 

The Bobcats had some chances in the second half, most notably when Gabbi Cottee split two defenders and fired a shot at the goal, but it was saved. With just under two minutes to go in regulation, Curry sent a cross into the box, and an HBU defender appeared to touch it with her hand, but no handball call was made and the game went into overtime.

 

The two teams played mostly at midfield in the two 10 minute overtime periods. Texas State outshot Houston Baptist 2-1 in overtime and ended with a 14-13 shot advantage for the game.

 

The Bobcats will return to action on Sunday night at Rice. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
