Soccer Wins Season Opener 1-0 Over Sam Houston State

Huntsville, Texas –
The Texas State soccer team won its fourth season opener in the last five seasons, beating old Southland Conference foe, Sam Houston State, 1-0, Sunday night in Huntsville. The win moves the Bobcats to 13-1-1 all-time against the Bearkats.

 

In the 85th minute, the Bobcats' goal came when Serena Hines drove down the right side and unleashed a cross to the back left post. Jourdan Brown was waiting and knocked the ball in the back of the net after Sam Houston State's goalkeeper could not corral it.

 

After 30 minutes of back and forth to begin the game, the Bobcats picked up the intensity at the 15 minute mark in the first half.Tori Hale ripped a shot from 25 yards out just high of the goal.

 

Five minutes later Hale cut across the middle of the field and sent a cross over to Taylor Person, but Person's header was just left of goal.

 

Hale made some more noise in the first minute of the second half, as her shot from just outside the 18 yards back was also wide left.

 

Freshman Lynsey Curry had one of the most acrobatic shots of the night. Facing behind her, Curry ripped a shot on goal that forced the goalkeeper to make a diving save to her left.

 

Sister Sydney was on the back post of a corner kick in the 60th minute but the ensuing shot was wide. Two minutes later, Felicia Leask had the ball in the center of the box, but was blocked by a Bearkat defender.

 

In goal, Natalie Gardini, had her fourth career shutout in seven starts. She made four saves on the night.

 

The Bobcats will stay on the road for their next two games, at the Miner Classic in El Paso. The Bobcats play UTEP on Wednesday, Aug. 22, before facing Army on Friday, Aug. 24.
